Hello
DB: Hello and welcome to Learn English Through Football’s weekly football expression podcast. I’m Damon and I’ll be your host on this short podcast. Over here in Tokyo, where I am based, the sunny weather disappeared for a bit to be replaced by clouds and a little bit of rain. It is still hot though! I hope it is nicer weather wherever you are listening from.
Today’s Show
On today’s show, we will focus on the adjective phrase ‘out-and-out’ and how it is used to talk about players and their style of play.
Stinger: You are listening to the Learn English Through Football Podcast (from an Arsenal Fan)
Thank you for that message and congratulations as the Gunners clinch the Premier League title!
Out-and-out
DB: OK, today’s phrase is ‘out-and-out‘ which can give us phrases like ‘an out-and-out defender‘, winger‘, and or goal scorer’ and so on. ‘Out-and-out‘ in these phrases means absolute, 100%, total. So, a total defender, a 100% attacker, a winger that only focuses on being a winger.
Now, this week, the season has ended in most European countries and talk turns to transfers and new players. I know that fans of my team Liverpool want an out-and out wide player or winger. They want someone who hugs the sideline, gets to the byline, can take someone on, etc.

Other teams may be looking for an out-and-out defender, a player that is not interested in being a playmaker, or someone who can also play in midfield… just a solid defender.

DB: Thank you for that message, which was in Cantonese.
Utility Player
DB: Now, the opposite of an out-and-out player is a utility player. A utility player can play a number of positions. They are very versatile. If they are a defender, they may be able to play centre back or right back, as well as fill in, cover, for a defensive midfielder.
In this case they may be called a utility centre back: their main position is a centre back, but they can comfortably cover other positions.
These players are of course very useful, but also, they may find it hard to pin down, keep, a starting position. Because they are flexible, they are often kept on the bench to cover several players.

DB: And thank you for that message in Italian.
Old School
And finally, let’s finish with ‘old school‘ another adjective similar to out-and-out. Old school means traditional. In the modern game, players are used to playing different styles, positions, and systems. But more traditionally a player was a ‘defender’, a ‘midfielder’, etc. and we had a good idea of their style of play.
An old-school centre forward for example, is probably strong, tall, a good header of the ball, and has an eye for goal. They probably don’t create many chances, play out wide, and dribble with the ball.
Goodbye

PakarPBN
A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites. In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website. The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
