Hello

DB: Hi there everyone and welcome to our daily 2026 World Cup Language Podcast. My name is Damon from the Learn English through Football team, and I’m based in Japan. Japanese fans were very pleased with their team’s first match wich ended in a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands. How about you and the team you are following? It’s still early days, but I hope you are enjoying the matches so far.

I’m originally from England, so I was pleased to see them get a good win yesterday, but they could only open the scoring after a re-taken penalty – a phrase Damian, the other half of the team has already looked at. And talking about Damian, he is at the World Cup in Mexico – lucky fella! I’m sure we’ll get some interesting insights from him over the next week.

Right, let’s get started with today’s World Cup football phrase, but first a message.

(a) Gift

DB: Now there have been games with hatfuls of goals recently: Canada 6-0 Qatar, Switzerland 4-1 Bosnia Herzegovina – but I’m going to focus on a much tighter game, the 1-1 draw between the Czech Republic and South Africa. The word we’re looking at is ‘a gift’.

In football, the expression ‘a gift’ means an unexpected advantage that a team receives, often through luck, an opponent’s mistake, or a controversial refereeing decision. It suggests that a team has been given something valuable, a present, a gift, that it did not completely earn.

A good example of this was in the Czech Republic vs South Africa match and the late penalty awarded to South Africa. With South Africa trailing 1–0 and running out of time, the referee awarded a penalty for a handball in the box. The penalty was converted to make the score 1–1. However, a lot of fans and commentators thought it was a soft decision, meaning South Africa were lucky to get a penalty.

The ball was blasted at the Czech defender, who turned away from the shot, and the ball hit his left arm. It seemed difficult to avoid this, so a lot of people felt it was a bit unfair, and a gift for South Africa.

This expression is often used when a team benefits from a referee’s decision, a defensive error, or maybe a lucky bounce. Calling something ‘a gift‘ can also suggest that the opposing team will feel unlucky or hard done by.

(a) Lifeline

DB: South Africa went into this second match for them needing at least a point. Two losses with no goals scored, they were beaten 2-0 by Mexico in the opening match, would have been very bad indeed. So the penalty and the point, the gift, was a lifeline. A lifeline is something that gives you an extra chance, a chance to live or, in this case, have a chance to get through the group stages.

We could say they were handed a lifeline by the referee’s decision.

We’ll be back tomorrow with more football language from the World Cup. Until then, ta-ra!

PakarPBN

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
