Liverpool have been the team of the season so far and after their latest 5-0 win against West Ham have stretched their lead at the top of the table to eight points. Their Egyptian striker Mo Salah has been their star for a long time but this season he is playing better than ever and yesterday he scored one goal and assisted two others in the rout of the Hammers. However, Mo Salah is in the final year of his contract at the club which means from January he is allowed to speak to foreign clubs about a possible transfer. He can also leave on a free transfer at the end of the season if he wishes. Therefore, there is a lot of talk about his contract as Liverpool fans do not want their best player to leave the club – he has 17 goals and 13 assists already this season.

In this newspaper headline from The Daily Telegraph, they use a short quote from the player himself which suggests that there is not going to be an agreement very soon. They use the phrase ‘far away‘ which means that the two sides (the club and Salah’s team) are far apart or not in agreement in the negotiations. The headline also uses the number of goals that Liverpool scored against West Ham (five) to create an adjectival phrase, ‘five-star’ which means something is top class (for example a five-star hotel). So, if we wanted to re-write the headline we could say that: There is little movement in Mo Salah’s contract negotiations but despite this he and his team played at a really high level against West Ham to win 5-0.
