Newspaper Headlines: Christmas No 1

As we heard in our recent weekly football expression, Liverpool thrashed Tottenham in their Premier League match to extend their lead at the top of the table: they are now four points clear with a game in hand.

Although football in England does not take a break at Christmas, when we reach this time of year we can usually decide how well or badly the season is going (and will go) for a team. So, if a team is at the top of the table there is a good chance they will be challenging for the title at the end of the season.

In the UK there is also a lot of interest in the music charts at this time of year – people are interested in the best-selling song over Christmas, i.e. which song is no. 1 at Christmas. This is what the i-newspaper headline is playing on with the headline here. They use the phrase ‘Christmas No 1‘, which is usually used for the singers of bands that are number one in the charts, to show that Liverpool are at the top of the Premier League table. And they do this by putting this headline over an image of three of the main players from their recent victory: Salah; Szoboszlai and Diaz.
